NOVOCINE (www.novocine.pt) is an online cinema hall that makes available a new film every twenty days and comes up with the aim of creating a continuous access to works carried out by filmmakers and Portuguese-speaking visual artists, celebrating new authors alongside rediscoveries, bringing them together in an open archive in constant development.
The platform was created by Madalena Fragoso and Afonso Mota (Alumni ESTC), whose work has been focused mainly on the production and realization of independent films, and arises from the need to create new exhibition spaces for the films and the will to decentralize the circulation of cinematographic works. Not wanting to act in replacement of the cinema hall, NOVOCINE emerges as an alternative to the main circuits of film distribution and display, highlighting independent filmmakers and creators who work with limited resources, films without distribution structure, films that have been short on the circuit of the festivals or forgotten films to review, thus seeking to offer them a new or more extensive life.
Without imposition of gender or duration, each film will be accompanied by a text about the film or a conversation with the achievers, for a larger and more extensive understanding of the oeuvre. The aim is for the authors of the films to be able to intervene in the construction of the site, adding visual, sound or written elements that contribute to expand the universe of the film. After the twenty days of screening each film, this one will cease to be available for visioning but remains on the archive a dedicated page to the same, allowing access to the material made available about the film. Although dedicated exclusively to cinema and video in Portuguese language, the platform will be translated and subtitled in English language.
The first film that will be screened is THE HOME AND THE DOGS (2019), performed by Madalena Fragoso and Margarida Meneses and will come accompanied by a text written by the singer and songwriter Maria Reis, as well as a few scenes that stayed out of the final assembly. The upcoming films will only be revealed on the day of their debut on the platform.
